HYPNOBIRTH THERAPY
Hypnobirth therapy is a proven pain relief method, based on research carried out in the 1920’s by British obstetrician Dr. Grantly Dick-Reid. His theory is that what makes birth painful is 'panic and fear'. Therefore, using hypnosis to reduce the fear women have about childbirth, will make labour easier and less painful. A study in the British Medical journal on 70 women treated by hypnosis, found that the lengths of their labours were greatly reduced, and 60% required no pain relieving drugs at all.
HOW IT WORKS?
During hypnosis, pregnant women are taught to breathe in rhythm with their contractions, encouraging deep physical and mental relaxation which reduces the ‘fear tension and pain’ syndrome. Visual imagery is included to help you bond with your baby during pregnancy and also to desensitise the fear of labour and birth. Pain relieving techniques such as glove anaesthesia are also taught, which helps to numb the areas of discomfort during your labour and birth. Self hypnosis helps stimulate the body’s own natural painkillers to ease discomfort and gives you the confidence in your ability to remain in control and give birth without fear.
You can also use hypnosis during pregnancy. It can ease tiredness and morning sickness, and improve your general wellbeing. Dr. Martin P. Williams, a member of the British Hypnotherapy Association and founder of the Hypnonatal programme for painless childbirth says that using hypnosis in early pregnancy reduces nausea, and vomiting subsides within one or two sessions.
